For the state of Montana, wild trout are the only goal - Montana gave up artificial stocking in the 1970's, and now (except for a few instances where stocking is really needed), all trout fisheries are managed as wild stocks and enhancing habitat is the key. However, citizen groups like the Trout Conservancy of Montana are a vital part of accomplishing wild trout restoration.

Thanks to the hard work and dedication of so many over the years, Montana's wild trout populations are in the best condition in over a century.
